The Paris Club turns 55: Debt campaigners see no reason to celebrate
(Paris, 17.6.2011) As the Paris Club- an informal group of lender country representatives- celebrates its 55th anniversary this week, activists from all over Europe will wish the Club an ironic ‘Congratulations‘, outside the French finance ministry, criticizing the methods of the Paris Club and its current debt relief politics, and asking representatives of the G20 to support a fair and transparent debt court instead.
55 years ago Argentina asked its creditors for negotiations about its unsustainable debt. The Paris Club developed into a informal but powerful group negotiating restructuring agreements with indebted countries, but the club is intransparent and inefficient.
"We need new rules for international debt management. The old system under the Paris Club has not brought about a fair and lasting solution for overindebted countries. Many times it has only made things worse by prolonging the phase of overindebtness and providing unsufficient debt relief," says Mathilde Dupré from CCFD - Terre Solidaire.
"Members of the creditor club have ignored the root causes of the debt crises, including their own role in creating unsustainable and unjust debt burdens. Having pushed loans for their own vested interests and often motivated by geo-political interests, the members should recognise their failed policies instead of pretending to be charitable,” said Øygunn Brynildsen from Eurodad.
"Sovereign debt cannot be a private issue handled behind closed doors. The current debt crisis has brought dozens of countries from the South and North to the brink of a default. We need a transparent and fair mechanism, where a neutral body- not creditors- makes decisions on debt relief. An international Debt Court is needed!" comments Jana Zwernemann from Jubilee Germany
The action is organized by the international civil society campaign "Defuse the Debt Crisis” and taking place at Place Bataillon du Pacifique, next to the French Ministry of Finance, on Friday June 17th at 12:30 o´clock.
