Defuse the Debt Crisis
Lessons learned from debt relief in the past

On December 16, 2011 Jubilee Netherlands organises a Political Cafe in cooperation with Both ENDS and Oxfam Novib.
The Political Café will look back at more than 10 years Jubilee Campaign. In addition, we will identify the steps that should be taken in order to solve the global debt crisis in a sustainable way. Jubilee Netherlands and www.Erlassjahr.de have recently done a survey on the impact and effect of debt cancellation in Ghana and Mozambique. A summary of the results of this survey will be shared with the audience during the Political Café. These results can help explain current developments in debts on a global level.

Where do we stand now and what issues do we face?
- The debt problem is still very urgent, despite a decade of debt relief measures like HIPC and MDRI.
- There is an ongoing shift in focus on debt issues to rich countries (Euro-zone, USA, Japan), while developing countries still remain very vulnerable in this respect.
- Creditors – and their interests - are still leading in solving debt problems. A structural solution to debt problems requires a fair and independent assessment of the interests of both creditors and debtors. An independent ‘Debt Court’ would be a good step forward.
Key questions to be discussed:
- What are the results of debt cancellation from the past in relation to poverty reduction?
- What lessons can be learned from the debt relief in the past, also in relation to the debt crisis in Europe.
- What practical steps need to be taken to establish an independent debt court?

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international partners like Erlassjahr.de, the Jubilee Debt Campaign and Eurodad have indicated they will be present.
The Political Café is meant primarily for policymakers, politicians, researchers, civil society (in particular the -former- partners of Jubilee Netherlands) and all other interested parties to openly discuss and share their views.
